Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty is considered the scion of the Patiala-Kasur Gharana (style), primarily representing Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Sahib’s gayaki. However, due to his wide exposure to various genres and their maestros and musicologists besides his own gurus, he can equally well portray the subtle features of other major classical gharanas of India (Indore, Delhi, Jaipur, Gwalior, Agra, Kirana, Rampur and even Carnatic music).

He acknowledges his father, late Shri Ajit Kumar Chakraborty, as well as Shri Pannalal Samanta and Shri Kanaidas Baigari for his initial training. Later, he was tutored by Padmabhushan Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh, and Ustad Munawar Ali Khan (son of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan).

Pt. Ajoy Chakrabarty is a prolific artist with more than 100 albums to his credit, published in India, US, UK, Holland and Germany. The music spans pure classical to light classical pieces including thumris, dadras, bhajans and other types of devotional songs. He also has numerous recordings of Syamasangeet, Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrulgeeti and Raagpradhan.
